Magic. Twisted beyond recognition, it set fire to the world thousands of years ago, then returned, echoing across time itself to revisit the same devastation of the original Cataclysm. Heroes gathered to stop it, releasing a powerful Counter Storm to negate the effects of the original. And it worked, at a price.
Now magic is dispersed across the world like a fine mist, hardly useful at all, if you are an ambitious mage. All except for Valdemar, of course... That land of the sickeningly sweet and ever-so-just Heralds and their Companions... They lived for hundreds of years without magic, and now magic appears to be pooling there faster than anywhere else! It just isn't fair, is it? Well, there are other ways to feel the electric thrill of magic singing in your blood, and Valdemar... well. What could they possibly do to stop the flow of the times? Power calls to power, and the world's greatest source resides right beneath Haven.
The year is 1422, during the reign of the overworked and eternal bachelor, King Kris. Velgarth’s people are rebuilding after the wreckage wrought by the Mage Storms. Despite the environmental changes, Magic is finally returning to Valdemar—though the rest of the world remains nearly without. Herald Kris, son of Selenay, has just ascended the Throne with his twin sister Lyra as his King's Own. Between the devastation of the wars with Ancar and the Storms, Valdemar's monarch has a lot on his plate.
And he'll need his Heralds more than ever.
